There's a flood of light on the road, but a solid line in front of the car and nothing but black above that line. The beam on the 528 is exquisitely focused. In the 7 years that I drove HIDs, not ONCE did anyone flash their beams at me thinking my highs were on. I drive a mix of highway and local roads in the northern Virginia, DC vicinity. I had my 528 for 7 years and LOVED the HIDs. Now I think I'll stick with (better) halogens.īTW, here's another take on the HID issue. I'd even considered aftermarket HIDs as well. My 2000 BMW 528 had HIDs, and it was one of the features that I really didn't want to give up in moving to my OBXT. factory HID design seems logical to me, fwiw. Lesson learned, "theory" not disproved - hopefully everyone else can benefit from it. Like I said before - the highbeams are overkill, but they'll probably be the last highbeam bulbs I buy too, so oh well. ![]() So - good halogens aren't cheap, but considering they perform slightly better, I think they're worth the cost. The Apexcone HID's are $270 shipped, although you can get nearly identical setups with lesser warranties (1 year I think) for $175-200 range.īy comparison, the Osram H7 65W Rally bulbs are $26.40 ea, or $52.80 for the pair. I took the extra care to verify they were aimed correctly after installing them though.others might not be so thorough. Anecdotally, after driving about 3,000 miles with the HIDs, I was not flashed once by oncomming traffic. I liked that the HIDs came with lifetime warranties on their bulbs and I wanted something "better" so I gave them a shot. I think I'll just see the road better than you.Īs we discussed in the censorship thread - I'm not one to doubt good scientific reasoning, but I still like to test it every now and then. If you like 'em and they work well for you, power to you - I won't mind seeing you on the road. That said, I don't think glare is much of an issue with 35W HIDs in H7 Projectors. However, they are still not quite as good as an equally bright halogen bulb in halogen-designed optics. They work very well (relatively speaking) as a straight across retrofit. H7 projector bulbs are nearly identical in location and shape to their HID counterpart. so they should be fairly comparable)Īs you may or may not have noticed - they are also through the windshield at eye level for the most accurate representation.Ĭlick to expand.Yes - the main issue I had with that install was that it was in a reflector, and demonstrated extra light that was going all over the dern place. ![]() I think you're probably better off with one or the other & personally, the lowbeams are the ones that make the most sense to me.Ĭomparison pics (these are all with no white balance, manual shutter, ISO, apeture, etc. ![]() With the 65W lowbeams, I can hardly tell the difference between stock & HIR's. The color is something that definitely helped though - the road no longer seems to soak the light - it's actually illuminated by it! Imagine that. They also seem to be slightly better focused and throw a *little* more light into the distance. They did not have *quite* as much blinding foreground lighting, although it is still a fair amount more than stock. Immediate thing I noticed about the 65 Osrams? Hrm, they are just as bright as the HID's. So, I got on the horn with Daniel Stern & ordered up some new bulbs: The color & light seemed to get soaked up by the road except the immediate area in front which was too bright. ![]() After driving a few thousand miles down to Texas & back, and across Montana in poor weather though, I was not loving the HID's much.
